Two attackers against two defenders at the edge of the box. The goalkeeper adjusts position based on where the ball is and who can receive it, calling marking and the line to the defenders.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- Every pass changes the angle: the position adjustment starts at the moment of the pass, not after the ball arrives.
- Step back when a through-ball line opens; step up when the ball is controlled with no immediate option.
- Communication precedes the defender’s action — call before the attacker decides.
- Stay balanced to react to both a shot and a pass.
Progressions
- Start from a regained ball, with no time to organise beforehand.
- Allow a 1v1 before the 2v2, raising uncertainty about how the phase starts.
Regressions
- Always start with the same, predictable passing pattern.
- Reduce to 1v1.
