Progressive drop-back adjustment to a through ball
Drop depth progressively and under control as a through ball develops, instead of reacting late with an abrupt drop at the last instant.

Two servers alternate long through passes to different zones. The goalkeeper adjusts depth continuously while the ball travels, not only once the final destination is known.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- The drop starts the instant the through-ball intention becomes clear, not once the ball is already halfway there.
- Keep steps small and controlled during the drop — steps that are too large lose balance and the ability to react to a sudden change.
- Lateral position adjusts at the same time as depth, never one without the other.
- If the pass is shorter than anticipated, stop the drop immediately instead of continuing out of momentum.
Progressions
- Raise pass speed to match pace.
- Introduce a third server, increasing uncertainty about the pass’s origin.
Regressions
- Keep pass speed slow.
- Reduce to a single server.
