Circulation with a 3v2 positional overload
Use a real numerical overload (three against two, counting the goalkeeper) to exploit switching play as a progression tool, instead of circulating aimlessly just to keep possession.

The goalkeeper and two centre-backs circulate against two pressing attackers. The overload always allows a clean exit, but only if the switch of play is read in time.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- The numerical overload only counts if it’s exploited — circulating with no intent wastes the advantage it gives.
- Switching play is most effective with a firm, direct pass, not a sequence of short touches that gives pressure time to adjust.
- Read which centre-back is freer before deciding, don’t always default to the same side out of habit.
- If pressure temporarily cancels the overload, keep the patience to circulate instead of forcing an exit that isn’t there.
Progressions
- Limit to two touches, speeding up the decision.
- Reduce the overload to 3v3, demanding a finer read.
Regressions
- Increase the overload to 4v2.
- Allow unlimited touches.
