Commanding corner marking under a live read
Command defensive marking at a set piece based on an early read of the taker, not a fixed routine said the same way every time — the right communication changes with what’s being read, it isn’t a script.

Before each corner, the goalkeeper reads the taker’s run-up and adjusts marking calls accordingly. If the read changes during the ball’s flight, the next call changes with it.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- The marking call reflects the read that was made, not a memorised sequence of names — if the read changes, the call changes with it.
- Communicate with enough time for the defender to react to the marking, not to the contest already under way.
- If the ball comes out differently than the initial read suggested, correct the call immediately instead of sticking with the original out of commitment.
- After the contest, command line reorganisation before the next set piece, not just react once it arrives.
Progressions
- Introduce a second taker with different run-ups, testing read adaptation.
- Reduce the time between consecutive corners.
Regressions
- Always keep the same taker and the same corner type.
- Allow the call further in advance, even before the run-up starts.
