Shot-stoppingRepresentativeTechnique
Saving the deflected shot from close range
React to the shot that changes direction off a deflection, holding the set position until the last instant — the deflected shot was a thin topic and most punishes the goalkeeper who commits early.

2 steps
A shot from distance that passes a deflector. The goalkeeper must wait until they see the ball leave the deflection, without diving for the original corner, and react to the new trajectory.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- Hold the set position and balanced weight until you see the ball leave the deflection — committing early gifts the goal.
- Close-range reaction: fast hands and an explosive first step to the new direction.
- Accept that the deflected ball often only gets pushed away — the priority is to block, not to catch cleanly.
- After the deflection, find the goal again quickly, because a rebound is likely.
Progressions
- Unpredictable deflection off a player.
- Increase the shot speed.
Regressions
- Predictable deflection off a cone.
- Lower the shot speed.
