Deflection over the bar under a hard shot
Combine reading the shot from distance with the high deflection to safety — two thin topics at once (long-range shot and tip over the bar), on the ball seeking the top corner.

Hard shots from outside the box seeking the top angle. The goalkeeper reads the trajectory early and, when the ball goes high, tips it over the bar with the top hand, in full flight.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- Read the shot at foot contact — on the long-range shot, all reaction time is won in the read.
- For the high ball to the angle, the deflection guides over the bar with the top hand, not a punch.
- Stretch the body up on the high dive, the hand following the ball until after it has passed.
- When in doubt between catching and tipping at the angle, tip — safety is in putting the ball out, not risking the catch.
Progressions
- Shot seeking the top corner.
- Vary the side without warning.
Regressions
- Shot at mid-height.
- Bring the server closer.
