Making yourself big in the 1v1 (u10)
Teach body shape in the 1v1 — making yourself big and blocking — before any demanding engagement timing, in a domain almost empty at the youngest ages.

The attacker approaches slowly and shoots low; the goalkeeper works the blocking shape, occupying as much space as possible with the body. No collisions or fast contests.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- Spread out: arms and legs fill space, but the body stays balanced and on the feet as long as possible.
- Hands stay forward and low, ready for the ground shot, which is the most common in these situations.
- Don’t dive early — whoever goes down first loses the duel to a simple touch around them.
- Keep the eyes on the ball, not on the attacker’s feet.
Progressions
- Move from a rolled ball to an approaching dribble.
- Slightly reduce the reaction time.
Regressions
- Slower rolled ball.
- Shorten the approach distance.
