With the back line pushed up, the opponent seeks the space behind. The goalkeeper starts advanced, reads the pass and sprints to cut out the ball before the attacker, deciding between foot, hands or clearance.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- The advanced starting position is the price of defending the depth — but it demands constant reading of the ball in behind.
- The start is explosive, but the decision to come first: only leave when the ball can be cut out with margin.
- Outside the box, cut out with the foot or head; inside, the hands come in — the law decides the technique.
- Brake under control with recovery steps, so as not to overrun the interception point or slip.
Progressions
- High line with long sprints.
- Add an attacker contesting the race.
Regressions
- Medium line with short sprints.
- Announced through-ball.
