1 steps
Four defenders and the goalkeeper against three attackers in a midfield zone, with offside active. The goalkeeper commands the line continuously and adjusts depth with every change in ball zone.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- The line steps up and drops as a block — a late call breaks the line and creates a missed offside.
- Goalkeeper depth follows the line, never freezes at a fixed value.
- Anticipate the through ball from the passer’s body posture, not just the attackers’ position.
- If the line breaks, priority switches immediately to narrowing the angle, not trying to reorganise the defence.
Progressions
- Reduce to three defenders, raising individual responsibility for each.
- Allow the through ball at any time, removing the three-pass restriction.
Regressions
- Turn off the offside rule, simplifying the line’s decision.
- Reduce to two attackers.
