1 steps
The attacker advances at a controlled pace with no intent to finish. The goalkeeper narrows the angle and picks the moment to come out, but the exercise ends before contact — the focus is the decision, not the physical resolution.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- Come out to narrow the angle, not to attack the ball — the goal here is timing, not regaining possession.
- Keep a low base and arms away from the body throughout the approach.
- Time the arrival with the moment the attacker loses tight control of the ball.
- Stop the rep at the decision point — going to ground is not required for the exercise to count.
Progressions
- Raise the attacker’s pace to match speed.
- Ask for an explicit judgement of approach angle, not only timing.
Regressions
- Slow the attacker’s pace further.
- Announce in advance when the attacker will advance.
