Position reading in a high-pressure phase
Adjust depth to a high defensive block, where the goalkeeper deliberately operates far from goal — UEFA’s curriculum document treats this as an integrated competence, not a rare exception to normal positioning.

1 steps
The defence sits in a high block with the goalkeeper well ahead of goal. When a through-ball risk appears, the goalkeeper decides between dropping depth or coming out to intercept ahead of the defensive line.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- Goalkeeper depth follows the line, but never blindly — the decision always weighs the real risk of the through ball.
- Intercepting outside the box demands a decision made before the ball is played, from reading the passer’s posture.
- If the decision is to drop instead of intercepting, do it with a quick step, not hesitation halfway through.
- Communicate the decision to the back line as soon as it’s made, so block coordination doesn’t depend solely on the goalkeeper’s visible position.
Progressions
- Raise the defensive line further.
- Introduce a second attacker threatening depth simultaneously.
Regressions
- Drop the line to a mid block.
- Reduce the through-ball speed.
