Reading pre-kick cues on penalties
Train detection of the taker’s cues before contact — standing foot, hip orientation, run-up angle — instead of reacting only to the ball’s flight. Research shows what separates elite from novice goalkeepers is cue-based anticipation, not raw reaction speed, and that explicit cue teaching speeds up that learning.

The coach serves and manages the breaks.
1 steps
A taker executes penalties at match pace. After each kick, if the constraint is active, the coach names out loud the cue that preceded the chosen corner, so the goalkeeper consciously links the signal to the outcome.

Coaching points
- The decision has to be made before foot contact, not after the ball is released — by then it is reaction, not anticipation.
- Silently name the cue observed, even when the read fails: it is the habit of looking for the cue being trained, not only the outcome.
- Accept diving the wrong way when the genuine read pointed there — punishing a correctly-read miss teaches the goalkeeper to ignore the cues.
- Do not fixate only on the ball in the final run-up steps: the useful information comes from the hip and standing foot before contact.
Progressions
- Introduce takers who deliberately disguise their run-up, breaking the usual cue-to-corner relationship.
- Reduce the coach’s verbal feedback, requiring the goalkeeper to verbalise the cue they saw instead.
Regressions
- Keep the run-up and gaze always consistent with the final corner.
- Reduce to half-pace kicks for the first sets.
