The coach serves and manages the breaks.
Four defenders form a line around 15-16 metres from goal. On the coach’s cue, the block steps up or drops; the goalkeeper gives the calls that keep the line organised and covers for imbalances.
Coaching points
- Short, specific calls — “push up”, “hold”, the player’s name — never long instructions.
- Speak before the ball moves, not after: a late call no longer changes the defender’s decision.
- Identify the defender out of line and address the call to them by name.
- Keep volume and tone constant — shout only when the danger is real, so the emergency call stands out.
Progressions
- Replace the coach’s cue with reactions to real passes from a server.
- Increase the pace of stepping up and dropping.
- Add an attacker exploiting the space behind the line.
Regressions
- Static block, only receiving calls without moving.
- Reduce to two defenders.
