Outswinger to the far post: stay and save
Train the response to the outswinger, which moves the ball away from goal and punishes whoever comes as they would on an inswinger — completes the spin read, the library’s thinnest topic.

Corners and crosses with spin away, to the far post. The goalkeeper starts deeper, resists the urge to come, and saves the shot or header from the far zone.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- The outswinger moves away from goal — coming as on an inswinger leaves the goal open behind; the decision is to stay and adjust.
- Start deeper than on the inswinger, to cover the far post and the rebound shot.
- Read the spin at the striker’s foot and in the first third of flight, not once the ball is already moving away.
- Keep the feet alive: the far ball creates the shot from distance, and the goalkeeper must reposition fast.
Progressions
- Long outswinger to the edge of the box.
- Add a body to contest.
Regressions
- Short, predictable outswinger.
- Reduce the number of attackers.
