Short side step for fine adjustment
Perfect the short side step that repositions without breaking the base — the fine side step was an under-trained topic and keeps the goalkeeper balanced right before the shot.

Small lateral adjustments to track the ball, followed by an immediate save. The focus is always reaching the balanced set position, with the side step and not the crossover, over short distances.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- Over short distances, adjust with the side step, never the crossover — the crossover breaks the base for a small adjustment.
- The feet stay under the body, weight distributed, ready to push off either way.
- The shoulders stay square to the ball during the adjustment, without rotating too soon.
- Always arrive set and loaded at the moment of the shot, never still moving.
Progressions
- One-to-two-step lateral adjustment.
- Reduce the time between adjustment and shot.
Regressions
- Minimal half-step adjustment.
- Lower the shot speed.
