Goal kick with pressure to read
Isolate the goal-kick decision — short or long — which the literature separates from open-play distribution because there is a dead ball, time to read, and an opponent setting up in plain sight.
Choose a session and the exercise is added to today’s plan.

Goal kick with the opposition setting up differently each repetition. The goalkeeper reads the block and decides: short to a centre-back, medium to the full-back, or long. No game afterwards — the decision is the exercise.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- With a dead ball there is time to read, and that makes the error costlier: the information was there.
- Count the opponents in the build-up zone before placing the ball, not after.
- A deep block asks for short; man-marking pressure asks for long. The mid block is the interesting case — decide by the free side.
- Place the ball on the side that opens the intended pass, not always in the same spot: that is already the first decision.
- Communicate the intention before striking — the team must set up according to the choice.
Progressions
- Move to high man-marking pressure, closing the short option entirely.
- The opposition only moves on the whistle, removing the pre-read time.
Regressions
- Deep block, with the short option always available.
- Announce the option to execute in advance.
