Goal references without a ball
Build the mental map of correct position relative to the goal, before a ball exists to distract from that geometry.
Choose a session and the exercise is added to today’s plan.

The coach serves and manages the breaks.
2 steps
The coach moves around the box without a ball. The goalkeeper tracks, always positioning on the bisector of the angle between coach and goal centre. Cones mark reference positions and are progressively removed.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- With no ball, the only criterion is geometric: the right position halves the angle.
- Quick glances at the posts to confirm position, without losing sight of the coach — the habit used in games.
- Depth changes with the angle: deeper when the coach is central, higher when they are by the byline.
- Always finish in a set position, even with no ball to save.
Progressions
- Remove the cones, forcing the use of the posts alone as reference.
- Screen the posts, leaving the goalkeeper only their own proprioception.
- Add a ball, moving on to the arc and bisection exercise.
Regressions
- Mark the correct position on the ground for each coach position.
- Reduce the coach’s range of movement.
