2 steps
Server at the edge of the box, frontal or diagonal. Two players inside the box between the ball and the goalkeeper. The shot may or may not be deflected — the goalkeeper does not know. Rebounds are live depending on the chosen constraint.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- A higher, lighter set position than for a long-range shot: reaction time is the scarce resource.
- Do not lose sight of the ball behind bodies: half a metre to reopen the sightline is worth more than half a metre of ideal positioning.
- Weight balanced, committing to neither side, until the ball is truly gone.
- After a deflection, the priority is getting the body behind the ball; catching is secondary.
- Parry away from the rebound zone, never back across the face of goal.
Progressions
- Allow rebounds to be finished, forcing an immediate reset.
- Vary the origin of the shot without warning.
- Add a third player inside the box.
Regressions
- Passive players who only obstruct sight and do not deflect.
- Announce whether the shot will be deflected.
