Sprinting off the line to intercept
Train the explosive start off the line to cut out the through-ball and brake under control — sprinting off the line was a thin topic and decides balls in behind the defence.

A ball played into the space behind. The goalkeeper starts off the line, cuts out the ball before the attacker and brakes under control, ready to play or to save what comes next.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- The start is explosive but the read comes first: only leave when the ball can be cut out with margin.
- Run in a straight line to the interception point, eyes on the ball, without decelerating until safe.
- Brake under control with short recovery steps, so you neither overrun the point nor slip.
- Decide early between cutting with the foot, catching or clearing — the decision depends on the attacker’s distance.
Progressions
- Pass at the unexpected moment.
- Add an attacker contesting the race.
Regressions
- Announced pass.
- Shorten the distance to cover.
