Playing out under first pressure (u12)
Teach resolving first pressure with a pass to the free side — playing out under pressure was poorly covered at young ages and is the base of the modern goalkeeper.
Choose a session and the exercise is added to today’s plan.

2 steps
The goalkeeper has two centre-backs and one presser. They receive and, with the first touch, take the ball away from pressure to the centre-back on the side away from the presser. Progress to two pressers.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- The first touch always goes away from pressure, opening the body to see both sides before receiving.
- The head lifts before the ball arrives; the decision is made before the control.
- If both lines are shut, the right decision may be to play long — not forcing the short is maturity, not weakness.
- The posture invites the press in order to beat it; playing too fast wastes the advantage.
Progressions
- Add a second presser.
- Reduce decision time with a faster press.
Regressions
- A single passive presser.
- Widen the space between centre-backs.
