2 steps
An isolated breakaway with the attacker driving at goal. The goalkeeper reads the touch: on the long touch, attack the ball and smother it; on the short touch, delay and hold the shape. The focus is reading the moment.
Exercise sequence
Coaching points
- The smother trigger is the attacker’s long touch — the ball loose and away from the foot is the invitation to attack.
- Reach the ball first with the hands and the body behind them, smothering it with a spread body.
- On the short touch, don’t attack: delay and hold the block shape, waiting for the next long touch.
- Never go studs-up — smothering the ball, not the attacker, is what keeps the action safe and legal.
Progressions
- Touch at the attacker’s choice.
- Increase the breakaway speed.
Regressions
- Guaranteed long touch.
- Reduce the dribbling speed.
